In the labyrinth of India's media landscape, shadows of controversy and bias loom large, weaving a threatening image of sensationalism, unjust and lost credibility. Leading news channels, are at sword points with each other over TRP and BARC ratings, fighting to aggressively market their viewership; and turning a blind eye to the downfall of its media. Where media in India started as an insurgency to disseminate information about rebellion and truth, is now squashed by politics and propaganda. Ranked 161 among 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index- India’s media’s duplicitous standards are not completely self-inflicted. The tumultuous interplay between politics, technology, and journalism has shaped the nation's narrative into a distorted reflection of its true identity. The integrity of journalism is reduced to “masala” stories; a product of biased ownership of media. Concentrated ownership of media by the few elites, has diminished channels to debate between perpetuating war-mongering, or trivial and insubstantial stories. Adani, who is considered close to Modi is the majority shareholder of NDTV. Zee Media is part of the Essel Group, which is headed by Subhash Chandra- a former member of the Indian parliament, who lobbied for Modi’s candidacy. Odisha TV, network18, and countless others are all pawns in a larger game, and examples of a huge market, owned by a few people. Journalists are choosing to be adrift from the real issues, to maintain the image of those in power. Far from Independent and free journalism- the inherently powerful platform stands powerless against the authority. The seriousness of struggles and distress of issues are being judged by their innate benefit to the propaganda. Media is supposed to be a pillar that either changes the democratic discourse or mirrors it. Journalism stands powerless, dodging reality, branding content by neutrality and brown- nosing. Credible and candid channels are drowned by authority’s power and silenced. However, despite the overwhelming control over media, there is still hope of dissent. Certain News Channels, freelancers, reporters, and viewers stand beside independent journalism- and demand a turnover.
